Work Experience
2018 - Present
Culver Academies
Photography Instructor: I am the Instructor of Photography at Culver Academies. I teach a sequence of photography courses to students in grades 9 - 12. I am part of the Visual Arts area, a subset of the Fine Arts Department. In my Photography classes, students learn the fundamental processes involved in photography using darkroom-based techniques. We then transition to digital cameras and workflows. I manage a traditional black and white darkroom, as well as a digital Mac-based lab with Inkjet printers. The photography sequence begins with Photography 1, in which student learn use both analogue and digital techniques to learn how photography works, and how to use the elements of art to create effective photographs. After Photography 1, students may take either or both Photography 2: Analog, and Photography 2: Digital. In these courses, students learn more advanced techniques, and they create a proper portfolio in which they can express themselves through the medium. Students who take each of these classes and have an excellent portfolio are eligible to Honor in Photography, which entails an largely independent course in which they create a body of work over the course of their senior year. In addition to Photography, I also teach Videography and 3D Design.
Videography: Videography students learn how to plan, shoot, edit, and present short-form videos.
3D Design: In 3D Design, students learn how to design three-dimensionally in the digital environment, and then fabricate practical objects using these designs, using 3D printers and laser cutters.
Culver Art Collection: In addition to my duties as a teacher, I co-manage the Culver Academies Art Collection along with two of my colleagues. This collection is comprised of work given to the Academy by generous donors. The collection includes work of great value and historical and significance. My colleagues and I make decisions regarding the ongoing display, preservation, and impact of the artwork. We also evaluate the educational value that each work holds to our students, and use that evaluation to determine the appropriate role for the artwork. As I am an experienced photographer, it is also my job to photograph the work for posterity and insurance purposes. My colleagues and I began this role together in 2022. Since then, we have organized an appraisal, staged a permanent exhibition of the most important work in the collection, and created an online database.
